If you have kiddos in the New York City Public School system, chances are they're pretty psyched, and we definitely can't blame them.

Not only are youngsters about to embark on a week-long midwinter recess on Feb 19, but they're also entitled to a day off on Feb 16. Don't worry—the DOE isn't tossing out days off to its students, the Feb 16 closure is in celebration of Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year). If you were wondering why little ones seemed to be out and about instead of in class, now you're in the loop.

Lunar New Year—a city-wide event complete with parades, performances and more—is a cultural celebration that gets everyone involved. From kids' story times at the Museum of Chinese America to Korean marching band performances, this holiday offers something for all ages.

If you and the fam are wiped out after the festivities, you have a whole week to recoup...or pack in more fun while school's out. For those looking to have day-to-day activities, you should consider signing your crew up for Kids' Week at The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Not only is The Intrepid an amazing attraction, but it offers plenty of knowledgeable programs, and Kids' Week promises to examine science and arts, science and sports and much more.

But if your little one had his or heart set on some good 'ol r&r, use this opportunity to have a Netflix binge session or catch up on reading with some of the best books for kids. There's certainly nothing wrong with some quality time at home catching up on all things that had to be shoved aside in the name of social studies quizzes and math projects.

Now that we're mere hours away from the fun, check out our list of Lunar New Year events for the whole family and take a gander at our roundup of midwinter break activities—there's so much to choose from.

Still in need of some inspo? Have a look at our roundup of the best indoor attractions, NYC's greatest kids' attractions or the best fun restaurants for something delish.
