Before the Tree at Rockefeller Center can be decorated and turned into the nation's most famous Tanenbaum, it needs to get to Rockefeller Center, an undertaking that involves closing parts of the Midtown to traffic and using a crane to left the giant up off a 115-foot-long flatbed truck. This isn't a middle-of-the-night construction project. Oh no, the Arrival of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has become an event in its own right, and one of the best fall events for kids in NY.
The arrival takes place on Sat, Nov 9, 8:30am-11am at Rockefeller Center, located between W 49 St and W 50 St between Fifth Ave and Sixth Ave. Early-rising kiddos can get their photo taken in front of the tree, and receive a free print and digital copy.
The family-friendly are from 11am–2pm, and include live performances from Rock and Roll Playhouse, an illustration workshop with artist Angelica Hicks and face painting that has a Christmas tree theme. Plus, free packets of Norway Spruce tree seeds will be handed out—which might be a little more useful for those of us who don't live in the city.
Even if it's only November, but we understand if the spirit moves you and your crew decides to indulge in a little caroling. Who wouldn't want to sing a few Christmas songs for kids? Whatever you do, you'll want to come back on Dec 4, for the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree—it's one of the best winter activities for kids here in NY.
