There are plenty of things to do with kids in NYC, and there are plenty of ways for them to (quite literally) get their hands dirty.

The next time you're visiting fun family attractions, commuting on a crowded subway or spending the day at your go-to kids playgrounds, embrace the "ignorance is bliss" mindset, otherwise you might start to worry about that whole hygiene thing.

Here are 11 things NYC kids do that are actually kind of disgusting:

1. Your little ones are resourceful: They'll latch onto a subway pole during bumpy commutes and pick their nose with the same fingers. Consider it multitasking at its finest.

2. You'll have to escort your tots to the potty at the most inopportune times imaginable. Brace yourself for some gruesome discoveries along the way.

3. That adorable unicorn backpack—which your little one carries to school, the playground, the park, the bus stop and everywhere in between—somehow manages to find a spot on the bed next to the teddies.

4. Youngsters love to size up the goods left on the street—toys! shoes! clothes!—and beg you to add said goods to their collection.

5. Free samples?! *Sticks hand in pile immediately.*

6. A trip to the local public pool is a must during the summertime. Swallowing some of the water? Eh, no biggie.

7. Kiddos will be so anxious to refuel with hot dogs after their Luna Park visit that they likely won't even think about washing their hands.

8. Kids love the convenience of flip-flops. They can walk all over the nabe with a new pair from Old Navy, then walk into your perfectly clean apartment with dirty feet. No untying required!

9. There are plenty of great playgrounds throughout the city...and plenty of germs lurking on the jungle gyms' surface where your tots just plopped down for a breather.

10. When it comes time to toss a popsicle stick, your foodies will touch just about every part of the garbage pail before the stick makes it into the trash.

11. Kiddos will scoot anywhere: Up the block, to their next playdate and even across the living room. Those dirty wheels will have a field day with your new rug from Wayfair.
