When it comes to art classes, nothing – apparently – is quite as inspiring as the nude human form. Here are some regular nights that will help you uncover your artistic talent.

Brett Whiteley Studio

The studio holds 6-week life drawing courses where students are able to experiment with a range of media. Drop in classes are also available on the day, depending on availability. Term 2 May 6 - Jun 10 (booked out); Term 3 Aug 5 - Sep 9; Term 4 Oct 21 - Nov 25. Sat 10.30am-12.30pm. Full term $240, single class $50.

Glebe’s Friend in Hand pub hosts life drawing classes every Monday night. The three hour sessions start with a series of one minute poses to get your hand flowing and end with two 20 minute poses. Every Monday 6.30-9.30pm. $15.

Get your life drawing on at this hub for all things creative. Classes are held once a month and hosted either by artist Cilia Campbell or Nauti Studios. All materials provided. Class dates vary from month to month, so check the website for details.

Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA)

The MCA holds Sundown Sketch Club classes once a month on a Wednesday night - with a different theme each month. Classes may involve life drawing, architectural sketching (the glass-lined room looks out over Sydney harbour), or experimentation. MCA’s Artist Educator, Will French takes students through a series of tasks aimed at building confidence and skill. Classes tend to book out well in advance, so you’ll need to book ahead. First Wednesday of the month 6-8pm. $33-$42.

The Sunday Sketch Club is open to all levels; however there’s no tutoring given, so some experience is recommended. Each week participants draw from either a male or female life model using a range of materials. For beginners there’s instructed life drawing workshops from time to time - check the website for details. Easels and disposable pallets are supplied, and if you need any materials you can always pop downstairs to the art shop. Sunday Sketch Club every Sunday (excluding Easter Sunday) until Dec 3 2017.

Classes are held every Monday night, including most public holidays. There’s live piano music to set the scene while you sketch the live model. A limited number of easels are available free of charge. Every Monday 7-10pm. $10-$15.

Life drawing sessions are held every Monday night for less than the cost of a glass of wine. The early evening sittings are popular with the after-work crowd looking to get their creative juices flowing - there are no advance bookings, so you’ll need to be there early. Every Mon 5.30-8.30pm. $7.

The six-week course is designed to equip students with the basics of life drawing, from composition and perspective to the use contouring of tone. By observing a life model each week, students are encouraged to develop their artistic voice. The college also offers one-day life drawing workshops from time to time for those wanting to brush up on their skills - check the website for details. Doodle away with a garden view every Tuesday at Redfern’s 107 Projects. Easels and boards are provided, you just need to bring your own drawing materials. Music is played throughout the session, and for added inspiration there’s wine available. Every Wed until Dec 26, 8-10pm. $10-$15.

This Newtown cafe with a strong social conscience hosts life drawing classes every Thursday night. Each week a different theme such (strength, dignity, hope, etc) is represented by the life model. Every Thu 7-9pm. $15.

The Rocks Sketch Club is held each three nights a week during the school term. Drop-ins are welcome, and classes are open to all levels of experience. Life drawing painting workshops are held on Mondays and Thursday covering the basics, including colour mixing. Wednesday’s classes focus on pencil sketching, with an emphasis on line and hatching, rather than tone. Painting life drawing Mon & Thu 6.15-9pm. $20. Pencil life drawing Wed 6.15-9pm. $20.
