This award-winning retreat with Sound of Music–like rolling green hills is what romantic escapes are made of – and it’s adults-only

Vinegar. That’s the secret to the ridiculously fluffy white towel – as soft as a duckling – I find myself wrapped in, Louise later tells me. She washes them in warm water with vinegar, and the result is the most perfect towel I’ve ever found myself cocooned in. Truth be told, I don’t want to unwrap myself, but I reckon it would raise more than a few eyebrows if I rocked up to the Berry Donut Van dressed like this. Jeans it is.
I’m staying at Mt Hay Retreat, an adults-only boutique stay in Berry, two hours from Sydney CBD on NSW’s pristine south coast. If you look up the word ‘tranquil’, this place would come up. And don’t just take my word for it – Mt Hay Retreat has taken home gold at the 2024 and 2025 NSW Tourism Awards for luxury accommodation (among others).
Located on a lush farm up a steep hill, just 10 minutes from Berry’s charming township (watch out for wombats at night!), Mt Hay Retreat is made up of six sunlit and spacious villas, all featuring spectacular views, a large bathtub, kitchenette, rain shower and deck made for golden hour, soft cheese and chilled bubbles.
Soft towels aren’t the only thoughtful touch by the owners Louise and Andrew. One morning, we’re about to head off on a bushwalk, and they lend us their mozzie repellent. We’re welcomed with chocolate-dipped strawberries. The shower has views of a magical garden. Their recommendations for local spots to check out feel genuine, like they’re talking to a good friend.
The clever design of Mt Hay Retreat makes you feel like you’re the only ones there – well, that and the local birds. My favourite thing, however, is the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that allow you to drink up the rolling green hills and the Pacific Ocean from the couch, bed and sun lounge – with said bubbles. And while there are many cracking spots to check out in town (South on Albany and The Berry General Store are my picks!) – you would be forgiven for not leaving for the weekend. In fact, Louise tells me that’s what many couples do.
There’s also a 33-metre heated indoor pool, hot tub and large chess set for the game-lovers, while a massive ‘cloud swing’ is perfect for romantic moments (or a new Instagram pic).
As one of our writers said, the lime green decor may be a touch dated. But after a few nights here, my mind has cleared. I’ve read a book and slept for eight hours straight in the soft marshmallow-like bed. My partner and I feel loved-up. And I’ve learnt a new trick for my towels.
Mt Hay Retreat ranges in price from $380 per night during the week (Sunday to Thursday) and from $500 a night on weekends. Also, Louise and Anthony offer bespoke experiences if you need them (Read: want to plan a proposal? They'll help you out). You can find out more, and book yourself in on their website.
