As evidenced by the huge line-up of run clubs pounding the pavements in the Harbour City, Sydney's love affair with running is showing no signs of slowing down. And if you’ve been thinking about tackling a fun run but got cold feet at the thought of hills, long courses, or logistical nightmares, we’ve got you. According to a recent study by Net World Sports, the best beginner-friendly fun run in Australia is right here in Sydney. First stop Blacktown Mayoral Fun Run, next stop Sydney Mara.

The research analysed 75 of the nation’s most prominent races, weighing up course difficulty, environmental conditions, accessibility, and runner sentiment. Topping the list with an overall score of 64.8/100, the Blacktown event is a beginner’s dream: a low $10 entry fee, a generous 5.8-hour cut-off, and a course designed for smooth sailing from start to finish.

Hot on its heels is the Shire’s Sutherland 2 Surf, which also scored 64.8/100. According to the research, its course is practically stress-free, featuring only five sharp turns and a bus stop a stone’s throw from the starting line. Perth’s Chevron City to Surf rounds out the top three, offering five aid stations over a short, safe, and well-organised route – but lets face it, very few of us can afford a plane ticket to Perth in this economy.

The final NSW run to make the list was BayRun, which takes runners round the beloved Inner West running route on one big family-friendly, festival-style race day. This one scored a total of 53.9, and a notably impressive sentiment score of 86.
