Back in March, images were released of Sydney’s newest mega parkland – a huge 60-hectare space on the site of a former industrial quarry. Now, the next chapter for Sydney’s most ambitious new outdoor area is officially underway. Hornsby Shire Council has broken ground on the ‘Old Mans Valley Field of Play’ – a new recreation hub set to bring sports fields, bike tracks and more community space to the growing precinct.

Located in Old Mans Valley South, the new Field of Play will become the main entry point to the future parkland, acting as a gateway to the wider Hornsby Park development as more areas progressively open to the public. The project will include a multi-purpose sporting field, recreational green space, parking facilities and amenities including changing rooms, toilets and storage areas. There’s also good news for local bike riders: pump and jump tracks are part of the plan, giving riders a purpose-built space filled with rolling rises, dips and jumps to test their skills.

The new works build on the momentum of Hornsby Park’s first completed stage, which opened earlier this year and included the Crusher Plant Precinct, Southern Lookout and Heritage Steps. More walking and cycling links, scenic lookouts and recreational areas are expected to open over time as the massive former quarry site continues its transformation.

The project is being partly funded by the Australian Government through the Thriving Suburbs Grant Program, which has contributed more than $12 million towards the development.

Hornsby Shire Mayor Warren Waddell said the project will help support both existing residents and Hornsby’s growing population, particularly as the State Government pushes ahead with Transport Oriented Development plans in the town centre aimed at delivering more homes close to transport, jobs and services.

Construction on the Old Mans Valley Field of Play is expected to wrap up in mid-2027, weather permitting. You can stay in the loop over here.
