Sydney’s Harbour Bridge was recently ranked among the top 15 most scenic bridges in the world. And while we’re big fans of the harbour’s beautiful coathanger, there are other feats of engineering worth a nod in NSW. A case in point is the Sea Cliff Bridge – a floating road suspended above the ocean just south of the city. If the recent blue skies have got you craving a springtime road trip, we’d suggest adding this one to your route.

Where is the Sea Cliff Bridge?

The Sea Cliff Bridge is found along the Grand Pacific Drive, around an hour south of Sydney. It sits between the coastal villages of Coalcliff and Clifton, hugging the dramatic rocky cliffface of the Illawarra escarpment and jutting out into the ocean. Thanks to its dreamy views and surreal design, the bridge has become one of the most iconic stops on the scenic coastal drive south of Sydney.

What's different about the Sea Cliff Bridge?

Unlike most coastal roads, the Sea Cliff Bridge juts out over the ocean on pylons, bypassing the unstable rock face of the cliffs. This design not only solved the problem of frequent rockfalls, but also created a spectacular driving (and walking) experience – with the road and walkway suspended above the ocean.

How long is the Sea Cliff Bridge?

The bridge stretches for 665 metres, curving majestically above the Pacific Ocean. The floating design makes it a striking feat of engineering, extending beyond the cliff face rather than cutting through it. Its length also provides a spacious walkway for pedestrians to take in the far-reaching ocean views.

When was the Sea Cliff Bridge built?

Construction of the bridge began in 2003 after ongoing landslides made the original cliff road too dangerous. It was officially opened in December 2005, quickly becoming a landmark for locals and visitors. Today, it’s recognised as one of the most scenic coastal bridges in Australia – and it’s firmly on our list of the best road trips in the state.

What can you do near the Sea Cliff Bridge?

Once you’ve taken in the views along the bridge, there are a heap of car-free activities to keep you busy in this magical corner of the South Coast. Nearby, you’ll find beautiful surfing beaches, lush bushwalking tracks around the Illawarra escarpment and a handful of small towns home to overflowing op shops and cute cafés. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, we’d suggest swinging by Rosie’s in Coledale for next-level fish and chips, or getting stuck in to a Thai feed with a view at Wombarra Bowlo.
