Ask someone about Hong Kong nightlife and ‘Lan Kwai Fong’ – like a mnemonic trigger – tends to be the response. Even those cool cats who reply with something else like Wong Chuk Hang or Fo Tan still keep up to date with Hong Kong's most famous party hub. So if LKF feels inescapable on your club nights, you’re not alone. But there are plenty of other places you can go for a drink and a dance after dark. As such, we’ve rounded up five of our favourite clubs outside of Lan Kwai Fong.

RECOMMENDED: If you're looking to dance, be sure to check out the talented DJs who are defining our clubbing scene.

The best clubs outside Lan Kwai Fong

Oma
  • Clubs
  • Central

This small underground spot has gone through a number of surface-level changes over the years but one thing has remained constant – regardless of whether it’s been known as Yumla, Midnight & Co or Oma – this spot is the local mecca for underground music. The DJ’s are handpicked and the local spinners rank among the very best in the city.

Ophelia
  • Bars and pubs
  • Wan Chai

Heavy on concept, heavier on delivery. Taking into account the nightly performances, Ophelia is part burlesque, part Jacob’s Ladder and part… peacock feathers, all rolled into one decadent clubbing experience that takes in R&B, disco, funk, house and more throughout its ever-changing themed nights. Despite the opulent surrounds, Ophelia separates itself from its contemporaries by being eminently affordable with cocktails priced around the $80-$90 mark.

宀 (Mihn)
  • Clubs
  • Central

The newest spot on the list, having opened earlier this year. As much a statement as it is a club, Mihn positions itself as being a safe place for anyone – regardless of gender, race, religion or sexual orientation – to come and have a good time. The sense of community is only enhanced by the cosy, 100-person capacity and being in the moment is of the utmost importance – photos are forbidden to be taken inside the club under any circumstance. Club nights are carefully curated with some of the best local and international underground talent. All round, it’s one of the most exciting club openings the city has seen in years.

Social Room
  • Clubs
  • Central

A proper clubber’s club. Social Room is an incredibly affordable way to enjoy some of the best club nights in the city that feature both local and international talent. Rarely charging more than $100 at the door, you’ll find the dancefloor filled with amiable folk . There's not a whiff of pretention, only a convivial atmosphere all round, mixed with quality tunes.

  • Nightlife
  • Clubs
  • Central

When you strip away all the ludicrous Imperial Japan imagery and the what-were-they-thinking gyrating ninja girls (which are all part of the hyper-reality fever dream fun) you’re left with an honest-to-goodness great club that takes its DJs and its drinks very seriously.
