We’ve still got a few more days to go until it’s Mid-Autumn Festival, but the Victoria Harbour promenade along the West Kowloon Cultural District is already lit up like a festive lantern – and that’s all down to the National Day Celebration – with a Chinese Costume Carnival event that’s taken over the Harbourside East Lawn of the Art Park!

Here until October 2, visitors can marvel at an illuminated collection of giant sculptural lanterns, which blend traditional Chinese culture and fashion with heritage craftsmanship and modern sensibilities and technologies. Four supersized Zigong lanterns, done up in a ‘Hong Kong fairies’ design with Chinese hanfu dresses and elaborate accessories to match, showcase the intricacies of the Zigong style of lantern-making – an art form hailing from Sichuan that’s counted among China’s intangible cultural heritage traditions. Among the lanterns, the 12.8-metre-tall ‘fairy’ is sure to steal the show, as it’s the largest figurative lantern to be displayed in Hong Kong!

Snapping plenty of photos of these giant beauties is a must, but there are also other themed activities on offer as part of the National Day celebrations. From striking a pose at the Neon Street Photography Stage and browsing through souvenirs at the Cultural Market, to participating in immersive workshops highlighting traditional embroidery and other cultural crafts and watching dance performances, there’s loads to keep busy with.

It’s your last chance to catch these larger-than-life lantern displays at the West Kowloon Cultural District. Why not hop on the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui for a first glance of them from Victoria Harbour before seeing them up close?
