Pour one out for Indonesian Restaurant 1968 in Central – this is one of Hong Kong’s longest-standing Indonesian eateries and it has just shuttered for good, putting a full stop onto its legacy of nearly 60 years.

As evidenced by its name, the first iteration of this restaurant opened in 1968, on Yun Ping Road in Causeway Bay. It has since moved around several homes in Causeway Bay and Sheung Wan, before finally settling into a space under the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator in 2023.

Indonesian Restaurant 1968 was a family business until the end; Chang Chian Lo and Lee Thau Chen were an Indonesian couple who moved to Hong Kong and decided to bring a taste of Southeast Asia with them. They almost had to shut down during the SARS outbreak of 2003 but managed to persevere on with the help of their three sons. Up until its closure, Indonesian Restaurant 1968 was being run by the grandson of the original proprietors, Hudson Chang.

This humble eatery was well-liked for keeping prices wallet-friendly despite being located in Central, with dishes such as satay skewers, Indonesian fried chicken, beef rendang, and nasi goreng being very popular. It has also been recognised by the Michelin Bib Gourmand consecutively from 2011 to 2017.
