Hail the delicious halcyon days of summer

To us, lemons and oranges have always been very evocative of summertime – think the tartness of fresh juices, sun-kissed trees and groves along the Amalfi coast, and citrus zest grated onto pasta al limone. Clearly the lovely folks at La Petite Maison (LPM) feel the same way, as they’ve just announced their new summer menu, The Citrus Narrative.
The French Riviera-style restaurant is paying tribute to the colours and flavours of the Côte d’Azur so citrus fruits are naturally woven into the dining experience, from Menton and Amalfi lemons, to Navel and Blood oranges. Against the backdrop of French artist Henri Matisse’s bright colours displayed in the restaurant, the meal begins with a refreshing watermelon gazpacho and vine tomatoes with smoked stracciatella in 25-year-old aged balsamic vinegar.
Other small plates include warm prawns dressed simply with olive oil and lemon juice, and beef tartare with cornichons, capers, and oyster mayonnaise. The French Riviera flavours continue with squid ink Mafaldine with clams and herb butter, with umami pasta made fresh to order then tossed in a citrus-infused herb butter balanced with the savoury burst of flower clams.
As for mains, the highlights include poached sea bream with confit zucchini and pine nuts, and the duck confit with orange and endive. The latter in particular is a twist on the classic French duck leg dish, pairing it with an orange reduction to cut through the richness. After all that, desserts thankfully lean a little lighter, with citrus panna cotta complemented by a blood orange sorbet and crisp almond tuille, as well as a vanilla cheesecake with a berry compote.
If you’re not doing much travelling around Europe this summer, LPM’s new dishes are the easiest way to be transported to the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast. Their summer set dinner menu is priced at $598 per person, and will be available this July and August.
