As part of its ongoing expansion strategy to cater to increasing traveller demands, the Airport Authority Hong Kong has announced that Terminal 2 (T2) will be open later this summer. The newly expanded terminal will begin operations on September 23.

Since this is such a large-scale project, the terminal will be completed and launched in phases, with the first facility being the coach hall. This indoor space will provide 41 parking spots for tour buses, cross-boundary coaches from mainland China, limousines, as well as resident coaches. These vehicles are currently being serviced at Carpark 4 in Terminal 1 (T1), which has always had the problem of being overcrowded. After the new coach hall is up and running, new ticketing counters and boarding points for coaches will also be relocated to T2.

Following on from the coach hall, the next phase includes opening departure facilities such as check-in counters, which is scheduled for the early part of the second quarter in 2026. The ultimate plan is for the expanded T2 to provide full-fledged passenger services for both arrivals and departures, with other remaining facilities to be launched in phases.

According to the Airport Authority, T2’s reconstruction also includes technological upgrades such as automated baggage drops, contactless services, and youth-focused amenities. Passengers in T2 will still initially utilise the driverless APM trains to get to the gates within T1, but eventually there will be boarding gates within the T2 concourse as well, slated to open between late 2026 and early 2027. Starting from March next year, approximately 10 airlines servicing regional destinations within Asia, such as HK Express, Hong Kong Airlines, and Greater Bay Airlines, will start to relocate their check-in desks from T1 to T2.

The Hong Kong International Airport started operating its third runway in late 2024 as part of its three-runway system strategy to provide expanded capacity as a major international aviation hub. This redevelopment of T2 is part of the $141.5 billion project, and costs around $12.9 billion.
