Europe may have a monopoly on Christmas markets, but Hong Kong has its own answer to festive fun. Rolling into the Central Harbourfront Event Space from December 12 to February 16, the AIA Carnival promises all manner of merriment. Adrenaline junkies can opt for a ride on gravity-defying rides while young families put their skills to the test to win one of many prizes on offer. And back for the third year running, The Great Circus of Europe and its talented troupe will shock and surprise with their mesmerizing routines. We’ve put together five of the best things to do to help you navigate the 36,000-square metre space.

Game on

Whether you’re looking to impress a date, challenge one of your bros or win an extra treat for your kiddo this Christmas, you’ll likely want to try your hand at one of the Carnival’s many game booths. But instead of your run-of-the-mill takeaway toys, this year’s prizes are inspired by Marvel movies, Disney classics and more. Take your tokens out for your chance to win a miniature yeti from Abominable, The Snowman and Snow Dog, Spiderman, Thor, Captain America or many more film-inspired memorabilia.

Sky high rides

No carnival is complete without a jaw-dropping ride or two. And this year, there’s even more in store, with the return of fan favourites and a few exciting new additions. The Starflyer returns after a two-year hiatus, and offers spectators sky high views of the harbour, while new ride The Ghost Train harks back to Halloween, taking you through a handful of scary sights and sounds as you make your way through the scenes. There’s also a 360-degree spinning ride – The Inversion – for the adrenaline junkies among you, swinging backwards and forwards at breakneck speed.

The return of the Ring Mistress

Back for its third year, The Great Circus of Europe returns with a new line-up led by a new Ring Mistress. The troupe's seven person springboard will leave you on the edge of your seat, along with Russian bar acrobats, swinging trapeze performances and a crew of gravity-defying motorcyclists performing in a metal globe, need we say more?

Your fair share of food

Your fair share of food

One of the best things about an open-air carnival is the wide range of snacks they offer, and this year’s AIA Carnival is no exception. Expect classic carnival staples like candy floss and popcorn, as well as a number of local street food delicacies, including curried fish balls. And for a little added excitement, celebrity chef Christian Yang – aka 'The Culinary Magician' – is on hand to work with vendors on delivering an exciting array of dishes, bringing the culinary experience to a new level. Moreover, the Carnival will be implementing several environmentally friendly initiatives to recycle and reduce waste.

There are countless ways to spend your time at the AIA Carnival, but even when you find yourself simply roaming about and exploring, the entertainment comes to you. Performers keep the crowd’s energy levels high with live music, sleight of hand performances, cheeky tricks and more. There is also a programme of live music and dance performances by community groups in Hong Kong open to visitors throughout the course of the Carnival, keeping you in the festive spirit as you decide which experience to tick off next.
