Nowhere else in the world will you find an arts and cultural scene as rich, varied and beloved as London. And we’ve got the stats to prove it.

Every year for the past decade, Time Out has set out to find out which cities reign supreme when it comes to culture. This year, we collected the opinions of 24,000 locals from over 150 cities – they all told us how they rate the quality and affordability of the culture scene in their hometown. We then combined their responses with the insight of Time Out’s expert panel of writers and editors, who voted for cities that are particularly exciting cultural destinations right now, to present to you Time Out’s Best Cities for Culture with Intrepid Travel

Which city came out on top for 2026? Why, none other than the Big Smoke. A near-perfect 99 percent of Londoners agreed that culture in the capital is either ‘good’ or ‘amazing’, while our panel gave it a score of 95 out of 100.

London is blessed with a ridiculous number of elite galleries and museums that are entirely free to visit, and 60 percent of locals see art and culture in general here as affordable. Brand new cutting edge museums like The V&A East MuseumV&A East Storehouse and the Young V&A are all free to visit, as are a number of the cities much older cultural institutions, from the Natural History Museum and the British Museum to the National Gallery and Tate Britain.

Specific exhibitions that London still has to look forward to this year include a major show at the Tate Modern dedicated to the life and work of Frida Kahlo and the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in the UK for the first time in 900 years. Time Out named the latter the single greatest thing to experience in Britain this year.

There are more than 250 museums in London, ranging from the beautiful to the downright bizarre. And plenty more will be cropping up over the coming months – namely, the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration in Clerkenwell (which will be the world’s largest museum of illustration), the Museum of Youth Culture in Camden and the London Museum in Smithfield. In 2027, we’ll also be getting an ambitious new Beatles museum

But culture isn’t just artefacts and paintings. It’s also theatre, for which London scored 90 percent (the strongest rating of all cities surveyed). The capital’s theatrical epicentre, the West End, is home to around 40 venues hosting new and long-established plays featuring some of the biggest stars in the business. That’s not to mention the more than 200 other theatres spread out across the rest of the city, which nourish hundreds of emerging actors and playwrights.

The rest of your time in London might be spend at a free comedy night (where Britain’s best-known comics honed their craft), at a gig in a grassroots venue or shiny high-capacity arena, at a pumping day festival or at one of many major sporting fixtures that folk travel far and wide for.

Honestly, London’s programme of cultural goings-on is too sprawling to cover all in one go. But that’s what Time Out is here for. Whether you’re planning for the coming weekend or for the month ahead, into modern art of classic stage shows, you’ll find all of London’s greatest things to see and do right here.
