Given the name, it’s unsurprising that the taco menu at Westbourne Grove’s Taqueria goes on for longer than a mariachi band. Corn tortillas are made fresh every day and come topped with some of the most tender carnitas we’ve sampled. Steak tacos are just the right side of chewy. If you’re looking to show your cojones, douse yours in Cool Chile hot sauce sold in store, or cut to the chase and order the jalapeno tacos, jefe.

Neil Rankin blew our minds when his flame-filled restaurant opened at the end of 2016, and not least with his take on tacos. They grind corn on site and then hand press tortillas for an authentic Mexican flavour, but toppings range from a mega Korean-leaning soy-cured beef to black vinegar mushroom and ‘crab and pickled onion pork skin’ tacos. Get down there faster than Speedy Gonzales.

You can get uno, dos, tres tacos from just £4.25 at this chain of Mexican cantinas. But Thomasina Miers’ take on Mexican street food is still really rocking. The pork pibil tacos never disappoint with tender, slow-cooked pork shoulder topped with pretty pink relish, served on soft corn tortillas. For the intrepid street food lovers, monthly specials are worth investigating, too.

Casa Morita

At Brixton Market’s Casa Morita you’ll find authentic Mexican mole, chilaquiles and Day of the Dead specials come the right time of year. Tacos are the real deal, too, with chewy corn tortillas going down a treat. Order the taco de cochinita pibil for a slow-cooked pork version or go loco and try their volcan special, which uses grilled Mexican cheese at the base instead of a tortilla. Now bow down to the Aztec gods.
