On a street full of Halloween costume shops, Halloweentown is consistently the most popular, so don’t be surprised if there’s a bit of a line to get in the doors, especially the closer it gets to October 31.

A true Hollywood Boulevard institution, this iconic establishment has been serving the community for over 70 years. Not only does it cater to the public, but it also provides a lifeline to the movie industry with its impressive array of costumes, props, wigs, masks and accessories. In fact, in 2024 Tim Burton received his star on the Walk of Fame right outside and credited the shop as a childhood inspiration. Inside, you’ll find a large selection of adult and children’s costumes, jewelry, makeup, novelties, hobbies and collectibles.

This tiki-style shack is home to our favorite vintage shop west of the 405, located deep in the heart of Topanga Canyon. Once you get past the pirates guarding the entrance, you’ll be privy to what appears to be the contents of a kooky grandmother’s attic—think: varsity jackets, military uniforms, ’80s graphic tees, Nordic sweaters, antique sleepwear and Halloween costumes year-round. Of course, they’ve also got a more traditional range of vintage gear for men and women, too—much of it under $30—but we recommend leaving no marching band jacket unturned as you explore this offbeat shop.

Opened in 1984, this family-owned shop started as a vintage clothing store and later transformed into a locally beloved shop for all things costumes. Sadly, the store is closing soon after nearly 43 years (they were originally going to close after last Halloween, but you still have one more chance to shop), so stop by while you still can and support them. Plus, since everything must go, all of the shop’s inventory—including vintage and unusual pieces—is on sale. The aisles of the intimate space are also stacked with all kinds of Halloween costumes for kids and adults alike. Pair your ensemble with a mix of accessories including hats, makeup, wigs, shoes and more.

If you take your Halloween costuming very seriously, Western Costume, one of the world’s largest and oldest costume companies, offers thousands of costumes from major motion pictures and authentic vintage pieces to rent for the occasion. And while some costume shops have struggled in recent years, Western has actually opened a new retail shop that’s more public-facing (as opposed to the company’s previous by-appointment-only policy). Named Broadway & Melrose after two streets that played a large part in the company’s history, the North Hollywood storefront stocks “vintage treasures, costumes, books, home décor and one-of-a-kind finds pulled from the world of film and television.”

Beyond Halloween Town, Burbank’s Magnolia Boulevard is dotted with must-visit costume shops—so it’s a crazy-popular shopping stretch come October. Another standout on the street is It’s a Wrap, where you don’t have to settle for replica costumes of your favorite TV characters; here, you’ll be pulling original ensembles right off the rack. Transform into a star, literally, at this locally beloved store that offers a chance to don clothing worn by actors on the big and small screens. From elegant designer attire to campy Star Trek uniforms, they’ve got it all. Best of all, the prices are reasonable, making it accessible for all aspiring Hollywood fashionistas.

A few blocks away on Magnolia, you’ll find Playclothes. Thumbing through the racks at this costume-designer favorite truly feels like tiptoeing through the decades. Playclothes’s selection of reasonably priced pieces for men, women, children and home is one of the most consistently fantastic in L.A., and they turn it up a notch for Halloween. The inventory is mostly from the 1940s to the ’80s, both designer and ready-to-wear fashions, and it includes gems like beaded midcentury cardigans or embroidered ’70s handbags. Browse the costume rentals catalog for some inspiration.

From classic slashers like Ghostface and Michael Myers to of-the-moment options to elegant masquerade gowns and masks, they have all you’ll need to make you the star of your costume party. Outside of Halloween season, the shop is also a go-to outfitter for conventions like Los Angeles Comic Con and Midsummer Scream.

A West Hollywood icon, this intimate lingerie and costume boutique nestled on La Cienega Boulevard near comedy club Largo has been a go-to destination for over 25 years, serving everyone from celebrities like Madonna and the Kardashians to Playboy Bunnies and Halloween enthusiasts. Staying true to its name, the store offers sultry versions of beloved characters and fantasies, featuring everything from Alice in Wonderland ensembles to playful French maid costumes and much more. Recognizing that not everyone enjoys shopping for intimates in public, the store has a unique (and very affordable) membership requirement to shop. For just $2 a year, it offers what might be the most budget-friendly membership in all of Los Angeles, making it even more accessible than the metered parking outside—though the costumes themselves are quite a bit more expensive than your average Halloween pop-up’s prices.

Here, you’ll discover an electrifying array of superhero attire, timeless classics like Dracula and Bride of Frankenstein, and a captivating cast of cosplay characters—the mini chain is touting Dr. Doom and Minions & Monsters costumes in particular this year. Party City has a variety of cheap costumes for all ages—and even a selection for the dog—though the chain is better known its paper party supplies, from gift bags and decorative plates to spooky spider decorations and helium balloons galore. The Wal-Mart of party shops, the chain made headlines in recent years for closing down nearly all of its stores—except for a select few, including this location in Sherman Oaks. And in a surprise twist, the chain has found new life by popping up in office-supply store Staples, where, yes, you can now shop for Halloween costumes while stocking up on printer ink.

Address: 14735 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403. Check the Party City website for additional locations inside Staples.
