Grab your red shells and jump in your Kart, Mario fans: the party you've been waiting for has arrived. This Saturday night, Lygon Street pub the B.East is running a Mario Kart sudden death tournament, with all the bananas and golden mushrooms you can handle.

The rules are simple: to be involved, you need to sign up on the day (it's first in, best dressed), then pick up your controller and battle it out. It's a brutal sudden death match, which means you've gotta be ready to go hard, from the dry sands of Kalimari Desert to the dark dungeons of Bowser's Castle. The winner will take home a slab of beer, second place will win a $50 B.East voucher, and third will get a jug of Mario Lager.

And that's not all. The B.East will also host Theme Team – a TV, movie and game-themed band, who will be playing all your favourite Mario tunes (I can hear that sweet star power music already). Your host for the evening will be Mario Kart aficionado James Fahy, and you'll even be able to drink Kart-themed cocktails, from Princess Peach Fizz to Blue Tortise Shelltails.

So will you dodge the green shells and speed to victory? Or will you slide off the ice in Sherbet Land and be overtaken? Only time will tell – but if you've got an old N64 lying around (or you're playing Mario Kart on the new Switch) then you better get practising.

See you on Rainbow Road, racers.

Speaking of quirky events, have you heard that the Melbourne Zoo is hosting a '70s disco-themed murder mystery dinner next month?
