Matilda The Musical has once again proved itself a little miracle, taking out a record-breaking 13 gongs at the Helpmann Awards last night at Sydney Lyric Theatre – including (obviously) best musical.

Tim Minchin won best original score, and Matthew Warchus won best director; Matilda also took out best supporting male and female roles, costume and scenic design, lighting and sound design, music direction, choreography, and best acting roles for leads.

In other words: you might want to buy tickets for the show.

In terms of local winners, Melbourne Theatre Company’s Birdland won best actor for Mark Leonard Winter – his second win on the night, following best supporting actor for Sydney Theatre Company’s King Lear.
