If there's one thing we know about Melburnians, it's that although the heart is of our city is a bit of a concrete jungle, we love to get out in nature whenever we can. Whether that's strolling along a walking trail, cycling by a river or heading for a mountain hike, we're all about getting outside and enjoying natural surrounds.

So you'll be pleased to know that a huge coastal trail that's just 12km from the CBD has just had a revamp, making it an even more picturesque seaside stroll. The Bay Trail stretches from Williamstown to Point Cook, winding 46 km along Melbourne's western coastline. Along the trail, there's a marine sanctuary, seaside views and wildlife wetlands, making it an ideal trip to get a decent dose of seaside nature.

Previously, the trail had a hefty detour away from the coast towards the end, navigating around Point Cook Coastal Park – but an upgrade has installed a swanky new 400 metre boardwalk through the Cheetham Wetlands. This means that walkers, runners and cyclists can get to the beautiful Point Cook Coastal Park, which is loved by locals for its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife and peaceful environment. Sounds like a gorgeous way to spend a day out, if you ask us. Read about more details on the trail upgrade here

If you're doing the walk, you should definitely stop off at the swish new Altona Beach pier, too, which has panoramic ocean views. While you're out west, the seaside suburb of Williamstown is well worth exploring as well.
