Port Melbourne locals, we’ve got good news. Following a major maintenance program, Station Pier has officially reopened to the public – for the first time since 2020.

Over the past five years, the Victorian Government has overseen a huge refurbishment to make sure the pier continues to operate as a hub for shipping and cruise ships for years to come. According to government data, Station Pier sees around 50,000 passengers and crew annually, making the maintenance program “vital” to keeping the facility ship-shape.

While works continue during the week, the pier will be open on weekends and public holidays, giving Melburnians a chance to stroll along the historic central access way or set up with a fishing line and a bucket of bait. Accessibility has been carefully considered, with vehicle entry at the southern end and pedestrian access limited to the central southern stretch to keep everyone safe.

The extensive maintenance program has included refurbishing the pier’s gatehouse, reinforcing structural pylons, upgrading electrical systems, installing corrosion protection and renewing the wharf deck. These works aim to preserve the pier’s heritage charm while meeting the growing needs of the cruise shipping industry.

With its active shipping berths, two terminal buildings, historic gatehouse, former railway station and a quaint kiosk, Station Pier is set to re-establish its place among Melbourne’s most popular waterside spots – even as it continues to serve as a working cruise terminal.
