Time Out says

For three weeks only, taste popular chef and content creator Giannis Kalyvas' favourite Hellenic homestyle dishes

Whether you recognise his face from the YouTube cooking channel or you remember his sensational former restaurant the Real Greek Chef in Reservoir, there’s no denying it: Giannis Kalyvas is a man who knows how to put on a proper Greek feast. Venture out to Crown Towers this month and you’ll get to partake in one of his most epic yet.

It’s a pop-up restaurant held in the hotel's opulent Evergreen dining space that's open until May 21. Inspired by the home-style dishes Kalyvas grew up with as a boy in Larissa and then Athens, the generous three-course menu casts the limelight on authentic Hellenic recipes that have been passed down and treasured through generations.

Gather your family around for dinner to break bread hot off the grill and mop up an assortment of delicacies designed for sharing, such as spicy feta cheese, tahini and other classic dips. Next, you'll sample more mezedes (small sharing plates) like feta filo, zucchini fritters and authentic dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves). True Greek food lovers will delight in Kalyvas' kefalograviera – a hard, salted sheep’s milk cheese – cooked in a piquant tomato salsa.

Mains include a juicy lamb kontosouvli with baby potatoes in lemon sauce, stuffed calamari, tomato with cream trahana (soup), grilled octopus with fava, and a medley of sides bursting with fresh vegetables. To sweeten the goodbye after dinner, Kalyvas will treat you to two signature desserts: politiko thessalonikis (a Northern Greek semolina cake with pastry cream and cinnamon) and ehmek kataifi (a layered bread pudding with syrup and custard).

After a period spent churning out lots of tasty food content and hosting events in Sydney, Kalyvas has finally returned to our shores and the fanfare begins with this feast. It’s a rare opportunity to taste some of the most genuine Greek food you’ll find in Melbourne with paired Greek wines from Kir Yianni and friends.
