Time Out says

A major new musical inspired by Cinderella is making its theatrical debut in Melbourne

Lovers of feisty heroines, Broadway-style bangers and good ol’ fashioned fairytales rejoice, because an enchanting new musical spectacular is coming to Melbourne next year.

Making its stage debut at the Comedy Theatre in June 2023, Midnight is a Cinderella-inspired rom-com with a twist that is set to delight audiences young and old. It will tell the tale of Ella, a passionate young woman who doesn’t want or need a so-called Prince Charming in her life. When a dashing prince falls under Ella’s charm and quickly learns she is like no other, he must prove his worth while she tries to ignite his desire for change. All this before the magical stroke of midnight, of course.

Midnight will star some of the country’s most beloved musical theatre talents, including Lucy Durack (Wicked, Legally Blonde), Verity Hunt-Ballard (Mary Poppins, Sweet Charity), Thomas McGuane (Frozen, Jersey Boys), Matt Lee (Frozen, Mary Poppins) and Kirstie Nguy. Music and lyrics come courtesy of John Foreman and Anthony Costanzo, while Kate Miller-Heidke has also written an exclusive song for the production.

“The inspiration for Midnight is borne of the desire to create a fully formed, funny, complex heroine for a new generation and to create the definitive musical version of this magical, evergreen tale,” says co-director Dean Murphy.

Midnight will open for a strictly limited season at the Comedy Theatre in June 2023. Tickets go on sale November 11 via the website.
