It's widely known that all food tastes better when eaten outdoors. Maybe it's the fresh air, the sunshine or the extra euphoria that comes with being in nature, but there's just something magical about packing a picnic and venturing outside.

So whether it’s a gathering of friends in the park or a date at an outdoor cinema, add a carving of Mainland Aged Cheddar to your basket: Epicure, Vintage, Extra Tasty or Tasty. The cheddar is aged longer (from 12 months up to 32 months) for a sharper, bolder flavour and a pleasing crumbly texture.

Summer is the time for outdoor occasions, so grab your preferred aged cheddar, hit the deli for accompanying charcuterie, whiz by the cracker counter and head to these seven perfect picnic spots around Melbourne.

Melbourne loves a pop-up – we even have our own pop-up architectural space. MPavilion is a public events space that’s redesigned every year by a guest architect. The space (located in the lush green grounds of Kings Domain) then plays host to a series of talks, workshops and gigs, many of which are free. The space even incorporates seating, so if you forget to pack your picnic blanket it’s no sweat. But don't forget some crackers and some Mainland Vintage Cheddar: aged up to 24 months, it's perfect festival food.

It’s a wonder the footpaths in Edinburgh Gardens get used at all given the soft and pillowy grass that surrounds them. The lawns here are the very definition of lush, making them perfect for reading a book on or relaxing with friends – both of which are vastly improved by BYO food. Pack some bread, dried fruit and a block of Mainland Aged Cheddar for an easy and enjoyable Sunday in the park.

  • Abbotsford

When you lie back on the grass at Abbotsford Convent it’s easy to feel like you’re hundreds of miles from Melbourne – when in fact you’re a little under four kilometres from the CBD. This convent has had many lives: these days you’re most likely to find it filled with arty locals attending workshops or swanning around the flower gardens. The lawns are large and flat, so you’ve plenty of picnic spots to choose from.

The former home of art patrons John and Sunday Reed now houses a renowned museum gallery featuring art from Australian and international contemporary artists. Across the museum’s three buildings you’ll find works by the likes of Sidney Nolan, James Gleeson, Mikala Dwyer and Patricia Piccinini. After viewing the art indoors, view the art outdoors while snacking on cheese and crackers in the sculpture garden.

If you work at the top end of Collins or Bourke Streets you’ve probably already fanned out under the trees in Treasury Gardens. This verdant urban oasis is perfect for a sneaky picnic on your lunch break. The gardens have a duck pond perfect for eating cheese next to, and you might even spot a politician or two (please don’t feed the ducks or pollies).

There is an art to packing the perfect picnic. It requires a few choice practical items, quality ingredients and, happily, only enough forethought to have gotten the Champagne into the fridge in time to chill. Make the most of the long summer nights and take your charcuterie and cheese outdoors – because the only thing better than a cheese plate for dinner is an alfresco cheese plate with all the trimmings. We’ve broken down the essential packing list for a picnic into five simple steps to ensure you take every opportunity to make the most of our beautiful weather.
