From 1900 until just four years ago, passengers aboard the Puffing Billy steam train could dangle their limbs over the sills of the open carriages. After a brief hiatus to work on safety measures, that time-honoured tradition made a triumphant return on February 3.

Book in for a trip from Belgrave to Menzies Creek (a 25-minute journey each way) or from Belgrave to Lakeside (a one-hour journey each way) and prepare to feel the fresh air over your arms or legs as you soar above the lush greenery of the Dandenong Ranges. It's the best way to take in views of the rolling hills, open farmland, wooden bridges and historic stations.

The experience is available for adults and children four years of age and older, and children aged 4 to 13 must be supervised by an adult when sitting on the sills. Get ready to hang onto the carriage bars for a freeing feeling like no other.
