For those in search of a summer day trip away from the city, there are plenty of outdoor activities that await at these local venues in the North Fork of Long Island, the Hudson Valley and so on. (Think petting zoos, freshly-squeezed lemonade and farm tours.) Plus, you'll get to head home with a bouquet that's sure to make your digs feel like summer.

1. The North Fork Sunflower Maze

Come July, North Fork Potato Chips shares its farmland in Mattituck with some beautiful blooms. The Long Island venue welcomes visitors (and leashed canine companions) to peruse its North Fork Sunflower Maze and catch these flowers in all of their glory. Picnics are encouraged—and the good news is you won't have to bring the chips. Masks are required for the 2020 season. Call ahead for any questions about new safety protocols. All ages.

2. Garden of Eve Farm

An abundant harvest schedule and a generous events calendar make this North Fork destination a hit during the summer. Everything from sunflowers and snapdragons to strawberries and sweet corn is available at the organic farm. Tours and the Little Farm Explorers Program (ages 4–10) are the perfect family-friendly activities to pursue after you've stocked up on your own floral arrangement. Mom and Dad: Be sure to snag something from the brewery before you go. (And don't sweat it: the Farm Cafe's juices, chicken nuggets, cookies and other goodies will be perfect for the kiddos.) 3. Sunflower Valley Farm

The name says it all: A lively bouquet awaits when you make a visit to the Sunflower Valley Farm. It's the perfect scenic destination, and it even hosts photography sessions on the grounds for your special milestones. You'll be able to keep the whole crew entertained during a visit thanks to activities like face painting, a petting farm (call ahead before visiting) and more. 4. Waterdrinker Family Farm & Garden

Celebrate the summer season with a bouquet of sunshine! Waterdrinker Family Farm offers 15+ acres of seasonal fun, including a jumping pad, mini golf and of course, pick-your-own sunflowers. 5. Happy Day Farm

There's no reason not to be happy when you stumble upon bushels of sunflowers at this New Jersey farm. After wandering through the grounds and fixing yourself a floral arrangement to take home ($2.50 per stem, cash only), make sure to refuel with freshly-squeezed lemonade and shaved ices.
