For a moment there, New Yorkers were convinced that they wouldn't be able to take a dip this summer.

Then in June, Mayor Bill announced that select outdoor public pools in NYC would reopen, despite initial predictions earlier this year. Yes, the season was (sort of) saved—15 out of the 50+ locations would be able to operate this summer.

On July 24, eight outdoor public pools will welcome back visitors:

  • Queens: Liberty, Fisher
  • Brooklyn: Sunset, Kosciuszko
  • Manhattan: Wagner
  • Staten Island: Lyons, Tottenville
  • Bronx: Mullaly

The remainder of pools opening August 1 include:

  • Bronx: Crotona, Haffen
  • Brooklyn: Betsy Head
  • Manhattan: Hamilton Fish, Jackie Robinson, Marcus Garvey
  • Queens: Astoria

As expected, swimmers are going to have to get used to a variety of new rules and guidelines. Each pool will operate at 30 percent capacity and a new wristband system will be in place to reduce queue line congestions. Masks are required for all visitors and staff (minus lifeguards) except when you're in the water. The lounge equipment will be cleaned twice daily. Before traveling with the whole class, note that single groups of people are now limited to 10 or fewer individuals.

What will remain the same? The hours: 11am–3pm and 4–7pm. These 15 locations will remain open until September 7. Looking for more ways to beat the heat: These beaches and splash pads are great for families.

Enjoy the sunshine season and stay safe!
