The new-school class picture: Stomping Ground
Dennis Kleiman has shot musical hotshots like Tori Amos and Kings of Leon. Now, the Brooklyn-based dad and his team set up at local schools and snap yearbook-style portraits—minus the forced smiles and awkward poses. To help their personalities shine through, kids are encouraged to bring their favorite toy or dress-up costume.
Best bet If Stomping Ground isn't headed to your kid's school, arrange a private family shoot for $1,200 (one 11" x 14" print and up to four high-resolution files are included). Or take advantage of an open studio deal (check website for dates); packages start at $89. 162 16th St between Fourth and Fifth Aves, Park Slope, Brooklyn (646-235-4205, stompinggroundphoto.com)
The cozy baby shot: Cindy Johnson
Photographer Cindy Johnson will travel to your apartment within the first two weeks of your baby's birth to capture images of your new bundle of joy. Set aside special heirlooms or outfits and Johnson will find unique ways to pair your baby with these sentimental items. She always snaps a few shots of the entire fam, too.
Best bet Packages begin at $525 and can be customized to include prints, discs and coffeetable books. 646-325-4779, cindyjohnsonphoto.com
The upgrade: Classic Kids Photography
While the staff at this UES storefront takes classic studio shots, they're a notch above the typical Sears-type portraits of yesteryear. All images are black-and-white, and they're hand-printed in a darkroom.
Best bet Tuesday through Friday, sittings start at $395. The price tag goes up to $495 on Saturdays. 1182 Lexington Ave at 86th St (212-396-1160, classickidsphotography.com)
The complete scrapbook: Family Documentary
Joe Quint or Steve Hart will shadow your family (whether you're visiting Grandma in the suburbs or having a picnic in Prospect Park) and snap candid photos along the way. Rather than capturing one specific moment or event, the duo chronicles a slice of life and turns it into a photo essay.
Best bet A half-day session with a photographer costs $800; the price includes an edited CD, a custom-designed book and a password-protected online gallery. 212-226-7166, familydocumentaryphotos.com
The close-up: Kenneth Chen
The Hoboken-based photographer's Intimate Innocence series focuses on one part of your baby (toes, eye, tush and other adorable areas) at a time. Chen also does shoots in Tribeca.
Best bet A sitting and one custom 16 "x 16" unframed print cost $549. Additional works—including prints and albums—can be purchased. Chen also hosts photography workshops for parents. 646-734-6552, kennethchenportraits.com
The full package: Le Studio
Book a photo session and you also get a pre-shoot consultation to discuss what works best for your child (sessions usually last two hours and include up to three outfit and background changes). Worried junior won't be in the smiling mood? The experienced photographers aren't afraid to bust out the bubbles, balloons and wacky children's songs.
Best bet A two-hour session anywhere in the city—at your apartment, your child's favorite park—is $500 and includes 60 images. 20 Jay St at Plymouth St, Dumbo, Brooklyn (917-399-5967, lestudionyc.com)
