Chef Alessandro Pavoni of the award-winning Ormeggio at The Spit and A’Mare reckons every neighbourhood needs a good Italian eatery, a place where you can stop by for a glass of wine after work and the staff know your favourite aperitivo. We agree. Good news then for Summer Hill locals, who are set to welcome another casual osteria called Postino Osteria mid-2024, spearheaded by Pavoni and business partner Bill Drakopoulos. The duo have snapped up the highly coveted previous home of One Penny Red – a gorgeous, heritage-listed former post office – bringing a slice of the Mediterranean to the Inner West and complementing local favourite Andiamo Trattoria.

Expect a casual and affordable dining experience at Postino Osteria, with simple yet delicious snacks, larger plates and traditional Italian dishes, backed up with excellent cocktails, a strong wine list and warm service. And if you’re wondering about the name, Postino is a play on words – it means both ‘postman’ and ‘small but cosy place’ in Italian.

Pavoni’s wife Anna Pavoni told Time Out: “Alessandro and I actually met in the Inner West, it’s our original hood where we lived, so we’re so happy to be back in the area, it’s so exciting.”

After a decade of operation, One Penny Red had its final service on New Year’s Eve, well and truly going out with a bang and a glittering reputation. And with this news, it’s clear the historic site will be in very competent hands. We’ll keep you *posted* on an opening date.
