The wild camping experts at HipCamp have shared 7 of the most magical wild camping sites within easy reach of the city

There’s camping, and then there’s wild camping – where phone reception fully drops out, the stars dial up, and your only alarm clock is a kookaburra. And although winter in NSW might not quite be prime-time for wild camping (let’s face it, this is the season when glamping sites really come into their own), sometimes it pays to plan ahead. If you’re lining up a springtime escape into nature (the shortest day is behind us, so spring is already on its way) we’re here to help. We spoke with the good people from Hipcamp for their pick of the best wild camping spots close to Sydney to bookmark for spring.
Otford Park, Otford
Around 1 hour from Sydney
From $78 per night (2 people)
Hidden between bushland and coast, backing onto the southern end of Royal National Park, this little pocket is true wilderness just over an hour from the city. Expect cliff-top lookouts, easy access to coastal hikes and a surprisingly comfy setup with hot showers, a kitchenette and firepits.
Mellows Ridge, Calderwood
Around 90 minutes from Sydney
From $51 per night (2 people)
This 40-acre off-grid escape sits against the Macquarie Pass escarpment, a magical valley home to prehistoric fern gullies, cedar trees and fairytale waterfall tracks. Sites range from easy-access to tucked-away bush camps, with optional creature comforts like toilets and showers.
Nevertime, Yarramalong
Around 1 hour 15 minutes from Sydney
From $49 per night (2 people)
This single-site setup feels delightfully remote, thanks to zero reception and rugged 4WD access. There’s a creek, bush shower and deck, plus easy access to the Great North Walk for hikers.
Canoelands Valley Camping, Canoelands
Around 1 hour 15 minutes from Sydney
From $48 per night (2 people)
This laid-back 40-acre camp has sites with a mix of access levels, and a very good line in sweeping valley views. Facilities are minimal (portaloos and firepits), but the proximity to trails and Wisemans Ferry makes it a solid all-rounder.
Mystical Mountain, Mangrove Mountain
Around 1 hour from Sydney
From $79 per night (2 people)
On this 53-acre working farm, you’ll find a private valley-view campsite that feels worlds away from the city (though it’s just over an hour in the car). It’s 4WD-only territory – but worth it for the farmer-for-a-day experience.
Shady Acres Colo River, Central Colo
Around 90 minutes from Sydney
From $363 per night (group of 10)
With swimming holes, sandy banks and plenty of space to spread out, this riverfront gem is a favourite for groups. It’s one of the few spots where you can go big on numbers without sacrificing access to nature.
The Last Post, Central Colo
Around 1.5 hours from Sydney
From $37 per night (2 people)
This one’s an easygoing farmstay with open paddocks, roaming animals and access to a nearby river for when the days start heating up. It’s simple, affordable and perfect for campers who like their bush escapes with a side of fresh country air.
