The magic of The Peninsula begins long before check-in, in the mythology of its “Grande Dame of the Far East” status – but it only truly lands once you’re inside. Within the hotel's ornate walls, service is so intuitive it borders on telepathic, and you'll find beautiful, thoughtful touches at every turn. As Hong Kong’s oldest and most storied hotel, it could coast on reputation alone. Instead, every detail feels considered, tastefully contemporary and quietly exacting – a sparkling benchmark for luxury in 2026. Balancing old-world grandeur with modern precision, this harbourside icon is Hong Kong in microcosm. If you’re booking a blowout stay, you won’t find a safer bet.
Opened in 1928, this place is a masterclass in colonial-era opulence and wildly intuitive hospitality. The original building – a marble-clad, six-storey masterpiece – is plucked straight from the royal playbook: heavy doors open to a palatial lobby, glittering chandeliers suspended from the towering ceiling. The addition of a 30-story tower in 1994 almost doubled its accommodation capacity, and today the hotel is so much more than just a (very luxurious) place to stay: home to a luxury shopping arcade with over 80 boutiques and a suite of eight dining and drinking venues that are each destinations in themselves.
The smallest of the 300 guest rooms is 54 square metres, so abundant space is a guarantee. Design is tastefully timeless, and cutting-edge tech is seamlessly integrated: with discrete wall-mounted tablets and bedside electronic panels controlling everything from lighting and temperature to curtains and room service requests with the touch of a button. The marble bathrooms are properly decadent, featuring walk-in showers, baths, and the hotel's signature in-room nail dryers. Beds are immaculately made and divinely comfy, and there’s a real sense of home in the functionality of the space: large desks, well-stocked fridges, gorgeous glassware collections and dressing tables with pop-up mirrors.
If you’ve got serious money to spend, the 377-square-metre Peninsula Suite is home to a grand 10-person dining table, a gym, an intimate cinema and double-height windows opening up to staggering harbour views.
The hotel boasts eight distinctive restaurants, and honestly each of them is worthy of a visit even if you’re not staying at the hotel itself. First up, there’s the Michelin-starred Spring Moon – where refined Cantonese cuisine and beautifully decorative dim sum are served in an ornate, atmospheric dining room inspired by 1920s Shanghai. You can find modern European dishes and top-floor views of the skyline at the chic, Philippe Starck-designed Felix, or head to Gaddi's for European fare and live music. For something totally transporting, Swiss-inspired Chesa is as close as you’ll come to an Alpine chalet without leaving the Southern Hemisphere: with immersive interiors, piping hot Swiss fondue and an adorably intricate chocolate chalet desert that’s topped with chocolate sauce at the table. For a quintessential Afternoon Tea experience with live jazz and Grand Dame ambience, head to the lobby. For an elevated take on the hotel buffet, head to the Verandah, and for perfect post-dinner drinks with live piano, beeline for The Bar.
The seamless, infinitely generous, perfectly polished service is where the "Grande Dame" truly shines. There’s a 24-hour concierge waiting to tend to your every whim, and a world-renowned fleet of forest green Rolls-Royce Phantoms for chauffeur services and airport transfers. If you visit the pool, a fresh towel and glass of infused water will be by your side before you have time to blink, and you’ll return to your room after turndown service with your charging cables perfectly wrapped and fresh slippers by your immaculately-made bed. Thoughtful touches like "Pen Time" (the opportunity to check in as early as 6am, and stay in your room until 10pm on the day of check-out) and personalised guest ammenities are concrete examples of the Peninsula's commitment to making you feel as though you're staying with a good friend – a friend who just happens to be a member of the royal family.
You better believe it, and this is one of the most beautiful hotel pools I’ve ever had the delight of visiting. The 18-metre Romanesque masterpiece is found on the eighth floor, framed by marble pillars and signature green-and-white sun loungers. The floor-to-ceiling windows open up onto a vast sun terrace with sweeping views of Victoria Harbour.
Absolutely: on the seventh floor, you’ll find a spacious fitness centre packed with state-of-the-art training equipment.
Wellness is handled by a 1,100-square-metre sanctuary known as The Peninsula Spa, home to 14 serene treatment rooms, separate saunas, and aromatherapy steam rooms.
Directly across the harbour from the buzz of Central, you’re superbly situated in the fashionable Tsim Sha Tsui district of Kowloon – an easy ferry ride or taxi from Hong Kong Island, with unbeatable views of the city’s skyline. You’re also steps away from the Museum of Art, the Space Museum and some of Hong Kong’s best high-end shopping hubs, with a sparkling stretch of waterfront unfurling in front of the hotel for morning runs and sunset strolls.
