It’ll be a while before we get to fully enjoy it though

While the Hong Kong Island Promenade, which fully opened late last year, does allow you to walk all the way from Shau Kei Wan to Kennedy Town, there are certain small parts of the route which are technically not boardwalks, requiring joggers and sightseers to loop inland along pedestrian paths. One such section is in Kennedy Town, where tourists love cramming along the waterfront to take pictures against the sea, especially around sunset. Luckily, there’s something in the works to elevate the experience for everyone.
The government has just approved a 200-m-long, 10-m-wide promenade to be built along the Kennedy Town waterfront. Starting approximately across the street from Fish & Chick, this new walkway will connect the Belcher Bay Promenade to Cadogan Street. Instead of expanding the current pedestrian paths – which are already narrow and congested enough in this neighbourhood – this walkway will be built directly out on the water, involving around 0.25 hectares of land reclamation.
Aside from ample space for strolling and jogging, the Harbourfront Commission chairman Ivan Ho also said that the promenade will feature tiered seating. Its location further out to sea instead of being tucked inland also means that the walkway will most definitely become the coveted spot to watch sunsets and take golden hour photos.
There’s currently a century-old seawall at the site, believed to be one of the oldest surviving on Hong Kong Island – it is being assessed at this stage and the Antiques and Monuments Office will determine by the end of year whether the seawall is important enough to be preserved. The new promenade will also be built with prefabricated structures around it to encourage marine life and alleviate the changes made to the natural ecological environment and biodiversity in those waters.
It’s estimated that this waterfront project will have a budget of $1.5 billion to $2 billion, while construction is expected to start in mid-2028 to be completed in 2031. Hopefully this will disperse those mainland tourists constantly milling around New Praya outside of % Arabica!
