Make way, the ‘King of Mangoes’ has arrived

The ‘King of Mangoes’ has officially checked in to Tsim Sha Tsui! In India, the Alphonso mango is a national obsession, spoken about with the same reverence usually reserved for Bollywood legends or cricket stars. Grown primarily along the western coast, this specific mango variety is purportedly the gold standard by which all other mangoes are measured, prized for its concentrated sweetness, aroma, and soft texture.
This month, Gaylord Indian Restaurant is giving the fruit the royal treatment it deserves with a limited-time Alphonso Mango Festival dedicated to the seasonal star. The menu starts off with the Alphonso mango bhel ($118), a vibrant take on Indian street snacks that tosses cold, fresh mango with crunchy rice puffs, lentil vermicelli, chutneys, salsa, and spice. It’s a messy, juicy affair that’s all about the contrast of tastes and textures. The mains follow suit, with the Alphonso mango chicken curry ($168) using the ripe fruit to give the sauce a bright, lingering depth, while the Alphonso mango malai kofta ($138) features cheese-filled mango rolls swimming in a rich korma gravy.
Dessert is, unsurprisingly, where the Alphonso really shines. You can either opt for a creamy Alphonso mango kulfi ice cream ($88) or simply order a fresh Alphonso ($78) to understand why this fruit carries such a legendary reputation. The festival is running throughout May, though dishes are subject to seasonal availability.
By the way, if you fancy learning how to bring some of that modern Indian flair into your own kitchen, the restaurant is also hosting a plant-based cooking workshop on May 30. Led by nutritionist Vidya Sheth of Veganvidsy, the three-hour session covers three recipes, including mushroom tawa fry, rainbow salad, and a classic Indian kofta and curry. The class is $380 per person and includes plenty of tastings. Call 2376 1001 to book a seat for Gaylord’s Alphonso mango menu or sign up for the workshop.
