Summer in the city is about to get a lot wilder – or at least as wild as a shopping mall allows. This July, Hopewell Mall is bringing back its eccentric pop-up, Exotic Pets World, momentarily swapping out luxury boutiques for reptiles, amphibians, and crustaceans. The event crams over 15 rare and exotic species into the venue, offering a closer look at various wildlife that’s usually seen only in nature documentaries.
The exhibition is split into four themed zones designed to replicate natural habitats, ranging from damp tropical rainforests to parched deserts. Expect to cross paths with the critically endangered Lesser Antillean iguana, the Aldabra giant tortoise – one of the largest species of its kind in the world – and the ever-adorable axolotl. There’s also a dedicated aquatic zone featuring a giant river tank with various crustaceans and colourful freshwater environments, curated by local toy designer and crayfish expert Jeffery Yau. Finally, a special conservation zone has been set up to showcase a detailed model of the Chinese crocodile lizard, an ancient creature said to be rarer than a giant panda.
For kids interested in learning more about the creatures, the Little Zoologist summer programme offers a chance to play scientist for a day and go behind the scenes to get acquainted with the animals, monitor their behaviours, or even prepare meals for them. Visitors can also sign up for workshops ranging from insect specimen mounting to building miniature terrariums, or interact and take snaps with a giant tortoise on-site. Those who spend above a designated amount at the mall will also gain access to exclusive perks like tortoise feeding, a private guided tour, and discounts on workshops.
