Ngong Ping 360 is turning the big 20, and the famous cable car system is celebrating this milestone with a huge birthday bash that brings plenty of Hong Kong nostalgia and late-night vibes to Lantau Island.

This year marks the debut of the summer-exclusive Cable Car Night Ride, taking place across four designated weekends from July 24 to August 16. For these special evenings, the cable cars will operate all the way until 10pm (they normally close at 6pm), allowing riders to glide over Lantau Island and soak up starlit views of landmarks like the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the illuminated Big Buddha. Over 80 of the cabins have also been decked out in themed luminous designs, which visitors on the night rides will be able to uncover with a mini UV flashlight.

Down on the ground, the rest of the evening entertainment takes over Ngong Ping Village as it transforms into a neon-lit main street that will instantly take you back to 1980s Hong Kong. On the days of the night rides, there’ll also be a series of concerts featuring a stellar lineup of popular local singers.

If you’re visiting before the sun goes down, the daytime brings plenty of retro charm too. Three large-scale photo spots have been set up around the village, including a mahjong-themed spot that captures the game’s lively atmosphere, an MTR installation complete with train seats and colourful station signs, as well as an ‘Ngong Ping Bing Sutt’ with old-school seating booths and checkered floor tiles.

For an additional $60, guests can even access a designated viewing area for the live performances and receive two snack vouchers, redeemable at participating merchants in Ngong Ping Village.
