From extended exhibitions hours to a performance about safety instructions, it’s all packed into just one week

Hong Kong’s art scene reaches its annual peak every March, and this year, Tai Kwun is set to be buzzing with all kinds of art events from March 23 to 29. Partnering with Art Basel Hong Kong, Tai Kwun Art Week is a seven-day celebration that invites visitors to experience creativity in motion, whether through experimental performances, after-hours gallery hopping, or simply raising a glass at a heritage-site bar.
The highlight of this year’s programme is undoubtedly its live performance roster, which brings together creatives from Hong Kong and around the world. On March 28, Art After Hours: Beings in Motion (7pm-10pm) explores the body as a vessel for expression. Curated around themes of embodied knowledge and vulnerability, the programme features leading creative voices such as Geumhyung Jeong, Justin Taplacido Shoulder, and Tation.
Another one of the week’s more intriguing offerings is Geumhyung Jeong’s ‘Fire Drill Scenario’, a performance that choreographs safety instructions to explore the excitement and risks both artists and audiences take when partaking in live performance experiences.
Apart from live performances, the visual arts programme at Tai Kwun is also worthy of your time. Be sure to check out Supplying the Globe, the second chapter of Stay Connected: Art and China Since 2008. Featuring over 70 works from more than 40 artists, it examines personal stories as well as places shaped by globalisation and China’s economic growth. The exhibition is on view from now to May 31 at JC Contemporary.
Other than Tai Kwun’s own programmes, various galleries at the compound will also be presenting exhibitions. These include Lily Stockman: A Grass Roof at Massimodecarlo Gallery, Ora-Ora’s Time After Time, a Shi Yuguang lacquer painting solo exhibition at The Gallery bu Soil, and Touch Gallery’s The Light Seeker.
Happily, Tai Kwun’s bars have also risen to the occasion with extended happy hours throughout the seven days. 1862 Bar de Tapas y Vino keeps things simple with Sangria All Day Happy Hour ($68/glass, 12pm–10pm daily). For tea lovers, LockCha Tea House is offering an all-day happy hour (11am-10pm, Sun-Thu; 11am-11pm, Fri-Sat), while Shiro is serving up their Shiro Hour from 2.30pm to 6.30pm with drinks from $58, Finally, The Dispensary mixes things up with buy-one-get-one-free on selected drinks (3pm-8pm, March 23-26 & 28-29), plus unlimited snacks to go with your sips.
