Coil has opened on Chapel Street with a first-of-its-kind audio system (plus spicy Martinis and free snacks)

Melbourne’s nightlife scene has welcomed some new names over the past few weeks (hello to Eat the Beat’s permanent venue) and it’s not showing signs of slowing down. On May 1, the team behind Rumbler, Windsor’s favourite vinyl haunt, opened the doors to Coil: a slick new late-night club and listening bar that’s a more high-energy, elevated evolution of Rumbler’s DNA.
Part bar, part audiophile playground, Coil is the first club in Australia to install Tom Danley Synergy Horns – a seriously high-spec sound system that delivers crystal-clear audio across the entire room (not just right in front of the DJ booth). In simple terms: wherever you’re standing, it’ll sound good.
But this isn’t just a temple to acoustics. From 5pm, Coil runs as a laid-back bar, pouring house-shaken cocktails alongside a tight list of local beers and mostly natural wines. Expect drinks built around independent producers – like Tommy’s Booze starring in Mandarin Margaritas and Kiwi Sours – plus signatures like Passionfruit Mezcalitas and a Spicy Martini that’s already pegged as a crowd favourite. There’s also beer from the likes of Hargraves Hill, Bodriggy and Stomping Ground, with complimentary snacks doing the rounds.
Come 9pm, the energy lifts, with Coil morphing into a full-blown club with a rotating line-up of local selectors and international guests. Entry is seriously reasonable: free before 9pm, then $15 on local nights or $20 when international acts are in town – a deliberate move to keep things accessible in a scene where door prices are creeping ever higher.
Design-wise, everything has been engineered for immersion. Blue-tinted windows tease the vibe from the street, while a no-phones-on-the-dancefloor policy keeps the focus firmly on the music. Inside, translucent finishes and amphitheatre-style seating balance dancefloor intensity with pockets for conversation.
Coil is open until 3am on weekends (and 1am the rest of the week). If you like your nightlife with serious sound, this is one to queue for.
