If you thought the hostel bunk had reached peak evolution, Drifter would like a word. The design-led hybrid hotel brand has just unveiled its next-generation 'Dream Pods', launching as part of a multi-million-dollar renovation of Drifter Melbourne. The chic little pods are the latest accom offering from the social travel brand, and they could very well transform the way travellers spend a night in the city.

The custom-designed pods have been purpose-built for modern travellers, complete with secure integrated storage, a dedicated clothes rack, ambient and task lighting, and multiple charging ports (because one socket is never enough). Thoughtful spatial planning (with 30 per cent more space than a traditional bunk) means you can unpack, decompress and switch off without missing out on the social buzz that Drifter is known for.

Sitting within light-filled shared rooms, paired with multiple ensuite bathrooms and personal lockers (large enough to fit a suitcase) for every guest, the pods are a sort of hybrid model that understands the modern traveller’s contradiction: you want connection, but you also want a really good night’s sleep.

The compact pods are just one part of Drifter Melbourne’s refurb, which will also deliver expansive social lounges, co-working spaces, gym and wellness facilities, the Rambler Public Bar, and a rolling program of music, art and community events. Design cues nod to Melbourne’s laneway culture and creative subcultures, brought to life by trans-Tasman studio CTRL Space (the same team responsible for Drifter’s Christchurch property).

Currently underway and set for completion later this year, the redevelopment marks a big step up for Drifter’s Melbourne outpost. Design is a big win here, but the key drawcard is price – with overnight stays starting at around $61 a night.

The Dream Pods are available to book now, with Drifter Melbourne operating throughout the renovation – meaning you can try the future of shared accom before the full relaunch lands later this year. You can find out more and book over here.
