The Byron to Melbourne pipeline is a pretty well-trodden path, with the Northern Rivers region of NSW acting as a sort of satellite suburb for Melburnians seeking a little subtropical escape. And this winter, a pocket of Byron is landing right here in Melbourne.
Opening in Prahran on August 8, Navia is bringing its Byron Bay-born Scandinavian bathhouse experience to the Victorian capital – offering a new spot to slow down, warm up and embrace the city's growing love affair with contrast therapy.
If you’ve been lucky enough to visit the Byron outpost, you’ll be familiar with the Navia ethos: rather than treating wellness as something clinical or overly prescriptive, it’s all about taking your time. Guests are encouraged to move between a traditional Finnish cedar sauna, invigorating cold plunge pools, hot mineral baths and a steam room at their own pace, with beautiful communal spaces (and nourishing drinks and snacks) on tap for in-between. At the Melbourne site, there will also be infrared saunas and red light therapy to round out the offering.
Aesthetics-wise, we can expect Scandinavian-inspired architecture, natural materials and warm, calming lighting. Instead of white walls and whisper-quiet treatment rooms, the focus is on creating somewhere people actually want to spend time – whether that's with a group of friends, a partner or a good book between sauna sessions.
With Melbourne's bathhouse boom showing no signs of slowing, Navia is arriving at just the right moment. And if you're looking for a new way to survive the city's chilliest months, this might just become your favourite winter ritual.
