Forget about having to put your hand up to be deso driver on December 25, because it has been confirmed that travelling around Melbourne via public transport on Christmas Day won’t cost you a cent. Now if that wasn't any excuse to head into town for a long festive lunch, we don't know what is.
All trains, trams, buses and regional V/Line services (excluding Skybus and other privately run operations) will be free from 3am on Christmas Day to 3am on Boxing Day, with a regular Sunday timetable in place. And yes, this also includes the new Metro Tunnel – which will run between Westall and West Footscray every 20 minutes from 10am to 7pm. Some Metro Tunnel services will also extend to East Packenham every 40 minutes, and Sunbury every 60 minutes. You can check the timetable for more details.
Just remember, that if you're travelling on long distance V/Line services, you will still need to book your seat – but you'll be issued a ticket free of charge. If you've already done so and been charged, head to your nearest V/Line station and a refund can be arranged. Everyone else, leave your Myki at home – there's no need to touch on or off during this period.
Heading into the 'G on Boxing Day for the test? Extra trams, trains and regional train services will run according to a Saturday timetable (including Night Network services).
