We’ve all been spending a fair bit of time inside lately and it can seem a bit mundane to be in one place all the time. One way that you can change things up and improve your space visually is by filling it with some lush greenery. This may seem daunting for those of us who aren’t blessed with green thumbs, so we spoke with Dylan Hewlett from Fitzroy Nursery about the best low-maintenance indoor plants that even the horticulturally hopeless should be able to keep alive.

RECOMMENDED: The best Melbourne plant nurseries that deliver.

“They’re very tolerant of low light and they’re really good for forgetful waterers,” says Hewlett. “The leaves will droop when they need a drink, so for first-timers trying to figure out how often to water they’re great because they’ll let you know."

“Like the peace lily, they’re really tolerant to low light and they’ll also live for a long time in quite a small pot and don’t require constant repotting,” says Hewlett. “They also seem pretty resistant to most bugs that you might get on indoor plants, so they dodge that bullet a fair bit.”

“They’re good because the care is kind of the same as the first two but they come in a wide range of varieties,” says Hewlett. “You can get the standard yellow variegation or the white variegation or even the golden leaf ones, so even within this basic plant you find a lot of diversity.”

“This is one that’s super popular right now, and they’ll tolerate all sorts of conditions outside of what they prefer,” says Hewlett. “They won’t punish a forgetful waterer, and the good thing about them is that you can start off with a young plant and actually have a really large specimen within two to three years.”
