Time Out says

This premier entertainment venue has been hosting some of the world’s best in sports and music for more than three decades

Rod Laver Arena has long been the home of Australia’s most iconic events.

Located within the Melbourne and Olympic Park complex in the city’s sporting district, the venue is perhaps most loved for its role as centre court during the Australian Open championship – and for hosting the hundreds of thousands of tennis fans that come to watch their favourite players battle it out in January.

The venue also has other blockbuster sporting and gaming events to its name, including gymnastics, basketball, BMX and boxing – and even transformed into an Olympic swimming pool in 2007.

For music fans across every genre, Rod Laver Arena is synonymous with memories of spectacular concerts from some of the biggest names in the bizz. Think P!NK, Dua Lipa, Beyonce, Bob Dylan, Elton John and The Rolling Stones, and that’s just to name a few.

Rod Laver Arena seats more than 14,500 punters and features a retractable roof – a world-first innovation when it was first installed – as well as a range of different food and drink outlets. Accessibility features and parking are also available.

SZA

  • Rap, hip hop and R&B

In a major win for R'n'B fans across Australia, Grammy-winning American superstar SZA has just announced dates for a hotly anticipated Australian leg of her S.O.S Tour. The 'Kill Bill' singer will be taking over Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena for three nights in late April and early May.  When is SZA in Melbourne?  SZA will bring her vulnerable yet powerful songwriting to Rod Laver Arena on April 29 and April 30, with an extra show added on Thursday, May 2. These Melbourne shows will be the final stop on SZA's journey through Australia, after stops in Brisbane and Sydney. How can I get tickets to the Melbourne SZA shows and how much do they cost? The Live Nation Presale will start on Friday, February 10 at 2pm local time via Ticketek – with prices yet to be confirmed. The general sale will begin on Monday, February 12 (also at 2pm), with a limit of ten tickets available per transaction.  What will the SZA Melbourne show be like? Few details have been released about what Melburnians can expect from the show, but based on previous shows on her S.O.S. Tour – which has taken the artist through Europe, America and Canada – we’re expecting something pretty special. SZA’s shows have been described by The New York Times as "vigorous, confident, theatrical and intimate”. We'd expect nothing less. Who will the Melbourne SZA support acts be? The support acts for SZA’s Melbourne show are yet to be announced, but special performances at previous shows have included angelic vocalist Phoebe Br

Niall Horan

  • Pop

The only direction we will be heading in is towards Rod Laver Arena after hearing the news that former One Direction’er Niall Horan will perform next autumn. The hugely popular – and all-round ‘cheeky chappy’ – will return to Australia in 2024 for three huge shows in Brisbane, Sydney, and, of course, our dear Melbourne. The singer will perform on May 3, 2024, off the back of his most recent album, The Show, which is scheduled to drop on June 9, 2023. Concertgoers can expect to hear tracks from the forthcoming album but also a whole mix of songs from his solo career, including fan favourites like 'Slow Hands', 'This Town' and 'Nice to Meet Ya' — he may even have the odd surprise, cover song or unreleased track up his sleeve. Since finding fame as a member of the globally successful band One Direction, Horan embarked on a solo career in 2016. He has since established himself as a talented singer with bucketloads of on-stage charisma and an infectious blend of pop, folk and rock.  Tickets to see Niall Horan will be released on June 2 at 10am local time. You can get tickets and more info on the TEG Live website. Get ahead of the curve and grab tickets to Melbourne's upcoming gigs before they sell out.

Macklemore

  • Rap, hip hop and R&B

What-what, what, what? It’s time to pop some tags and look incredible in your grandad’s clothes, because Macklemore is heading back Down Under with a series of headline shows in Australia and New Zealand in May 2024. The multi-platinum and Grammy award-winning alternative hip-hop artist behind hits like ‘Thrift Shop’ and ‘Can’t Hold Us’ just dropped his first album in six years. BEN is his third solo studio album, and includes tunes like ‘CHANT’ featuring Australia’s very own Tones And I. Admittedly very listenable, this album has thrust Macklemore back into the charts.  Does anyone else remember when Macklemore headlined the NRL Grand Final in 2017? And he performed marriage equality anthem ‘Same Love’ just a couple of months before the result of Australia’s same-sex marriage plebiscite was announced? Anyone else remember holding up their lighter and crying when that came on at the pub? Anyone?  Moving on, our guy was last in Australia in 2022, performing the headline slot for the fifth edition of Fridayz Live alongside legendary artists like Akon, TLC and Craig David. After a couple of shows in New Zealand, Macklemore will play four headline shows in Australia, playing at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday, May 15. The national tour will kick off at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on May 11, 12 and 13, and also head to Brisbane’s Riverstage on May 17, before rounding out his headline tour with two final show at Perth’s HBF Stadium on May 20 and 21. The quartet’s SYNK: Parallel Line world tour is currently set to comprise 19 concerts across 13 cities in Australia and Asia, and they’ll be bringing their hyperpop magic to Melbourne in early September 2024. With a name derived from a combination of “æ” (avatar and experience) and aspect, this powerhouse K-Pop quartet – Karina, Winter, Giselle and Ningning – has carved a tremendous trajectory since they debuted in 2020 with the hot single ‘Black Mamba’, with record-breaking music releases and live performances including a mainstage set at Coachella in 2022. Thirty Seconds to Mars

  • Rock and indie

There's promotion. And then there's scaling the Empire State Building. Thirty Seconds to Mars' Jared Leto made history in November when he became the first person to legally scale the Manhattan landmark in a bid to promote the band's upcoming tour. "In a lot of ways, this album is about following your dreams and pushing yourself to do the impossible," said the actor-singer. "Climbing the Empire State Building certainly falls into that category for me." While we can't promise that Leto will be scaling Rod Laver Arena, we can promise one helluva performance by the multi-platinum-selling rock band. The Seasons World Tour includes a slate of Australian dates, with a one-off Melbourne show on September 12, 2024. Comprised of brothers Jared and Shannon Leto, Thirty Seconds to Mars has made a sky-rocket of a return with their sixth studio album, It's the end of the world but it's a beautiful day.  The album has signified a new era for the band, one that delves into the darker sides of the human experience but also serves as a cause for hope, a reminder that you can overcome any obstacle – and scale the seemingly impossible. Concertgoers can expect to hear hit songs from the latest album, such as 'Stuck', as well as hits from over the years, including 'The Kill', 'This is War' and many more.  Thirty Seconds to Mars will perform a one-off concert at Rod Laver Arena on September 12, 2024.
