The Australian Open has a rich history dating back to 1905, and now nearly 120 years later, it's become one of the Southern Hemisphere's biggest sporting events. Of the four Grand Slam events (including the US Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros), the AO has the highest attendance, usually attracting more than 800,000 punters. Long story short, it's kind of a big deal and if you want to be able to participate in conversations over the next couple of weeks, here's everything you need to know.

When does the Australian Open start?

The AO kicks off on January 16 and runs until January 29.

Where does the Australian Open happen?

This Grand Slam tournament takes place in Melbourne Park across Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena

What channel is the Australian Open on?

You can stream the AO on free-to-air broadcaster Channel 9

Who won the Australian Open in 2022?

Last year, Rafael Nadal and Ashleigh Barty took home the win for men's and women's singles, respectively. In men's doubles, Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis prevailed and in the women's doubles, Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková won. In mixed doubles, Kristina Mladenovic and Ivan Dodig took home the W.

What is the prize money for winning the Australian Open?

In 2023, the Australian Open prize money is a grand total of $76,500,000 AUD. To put that into perspective, in 2013 the prize money was a comparatively meagre $30 million.

How does tennis scoring work?

Look, we're no experts at the game, but in the simplest terms, tennis is played on a points system. A match comprises three phases: a game, a set and a match, and it takes four points to win a game, six to win a set and two to three sets to win a match. Still confused? Just relax with a cold bevvie in hand and cheer when everyone else is cheering.

Where can I buy tickets to see the AO in person?

Ground passes and individual tickets can be purchased through the Australian Open website.
