Saturday May 7

FREE Amazing Bronx River Flotilla
Sat May 7 9am--4pm. Starts at Shoelace Park, 219th St at Bronx Blvd; ends Concrete Plant Park, Westchester Ave between Bronx River and Whitlock Aves (718-430-4618, bronxriver.org). Subway: 2, 5 to 219th St; 6 to Whitlock Ave
Dozens of canoes and kayaks set sail on a five-mile run down the Bronx River to celebrate the start of boating season. You must be 15 or older to participate, but families with younger children can enjoy a free short paddle—or just greet the flotilla—at the end of the line in the handsome new Concrete Plant Park between 1 and 3pm. All ages.

FREE Calhoun's Carnival
Sat May 7 11am--5pm. The Calhoun School, 433 West End Ave at 81st St (212-497-6500, calhoun.org). Subway: 1 to 79th St.
Held rain or shine since 1963, this annual spring fair features favorites like rides, games, raffle prizes and a barbecue. Admission is free, but rides cost $1 to $4. Proceeds benefit the Parent Association Annual Tea, plus fund awards for teachers and staff. Ages 3 to 12.

FREE Seventh Annual Swing-a-Ring Day
Sat May 7 1--4pm. Riverside Park, Hudson Beach at 105th St (212-799-6464, swingaring.com). Subway: 1 to 103rd St.
Moving across the traveling rings of Hudson Beach—spaced about eight feet apart and hanging from a hefty support beam—is a workout for even the burliest of grown-ups. But tykes under 12 can attempt a junior set (with parents' help), take advantage of an individual lesson, or ramp up their circus skills with free unicycling, double Dutch, juggling and stilt-walking lessons. A sand-sculpting demo will satisfy those who prefer to stay firmly on the ground. Free Good Humor ice cream bars sweeten the deal. All ages.

FREE Columbia Greenhouse Nursery School Spring Fair
Sat May 7 11am--4pm. Columbia Greenhouse Nursery School, 404 W 116th St between Amsterdam Ave and Morningside Dr (212-666-4796, columbiagreenhouse.com). Subway: 1 to 116th St--Columbia University.
The school's springtime festival offers a moonwalk bounce house, pony and fire-truck rides, a petting zoo and face painting, plus snacks and a rummage sale. Admission is free, but there is a charge for rides. Rain date is May 8. All ages.

FREE West Side Montessori School Spring Fair
Sat May 7 11am--5pm. West Side Montessori School, 309 W 92nd St between Riverside Dr and West End Ave (212-662-8000, wsmsnyc.org). Subway: 1, 2, 3 to 96th St.
At this alfresco Upper West Side get-together, families can  enjoy homemade food, games and a thrift sale. Admission is free, but tickets for food and games cost extra. All ages.

FREE Festival of Ideas for the New City StreetFest
May 7 11am--7pm. New Museum, 235 Bowery at Prince St (212-219-1222, festivalofideasnyc.com). Subway: F to Lower East Side--Second Ave; J, Z to Bowery; 6 to Spring St.
The eight-day series on the Lower East Side is aimed at fostering new ideas about communal living and offers something for the whole family today, with public art, food demonstrations and more. Kids can get physical in the award-winning Imagination Playground play space or mix it up in chef-artist Anne Apparu's nontraditional cooking lesson, There Are No Recipes. In the Habana Works kids' corner, children learn how to make corn-husk dolls and risk brain freeze with a smoothie mixed by a human-powered bike blender. All ages.
