Indonesia's iconic nasi padang chain has just opened its first outlet in Singapore, and it's chosen a rather meaningful address – 738 North Bridge Road, the former home of Warong Nasi Pariaman, Singapore's crowd-favourite nasi padang eatery, which shuttered this year after a 78-year run. Sederhana was founded in 1972 and now operates over 200 outlets across Indonesia, with a presence in Malaysia and, more recently, Melbourne, Australia. On the menu, expect authentic Minangkabau (West Sumatran) flavours in dishes like beef rendang ($6), telur barendo (deep-fried omelette, $2) and ayam pop (chicken cooked in coconut water and coconut curry, $6) – the familiar line-up of rich, spicy classics that make nasi padang such a hit. Gulai tunjang (beef tendon, $3.50) is another must-order for its rich, creamy coconut sauce and gelatinous, chewy texture. Tip: go in with your hands; it's worth it.

True blue Peranakan cuisine fans will remember Cherki, the modern Peranakan bistro at Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre. The same team recently launched Nyonya Next Door, a fast-casual Peranakan eatery in the CBD, serving up affordable classics below $10. At the heart of the menu are three signature bases: lemongrass blue pea coconut rice, kerabu beehoon or a rich Nyonya black curry rice. Then, pile on mains (from $8.90) like eight-hour-cooked beef brisket rendang, assam pedas barramundi, coconut chicken kapitan and plenty more options. Don't skip the trio of house-made sambal either, from the original to a punchy sambal matah and sambal ijo. Still hungry? Add on sides like otah ($2), chicken ngoh hiang ($1.70), fried bergedil ($1.20) or even Nyonya chap chye ($1.50) to complete the meal. Round things off with coffee and tea, which are also reasonably priced from $1.80.

Chef Denis Lucchi, the man behind one-Michelin-starred Buona Terra and Locando, is striking out with a new concept along Neil Road, slated to open on August 10. Assaggi is a contemporary Italian degustation restaurant focused on the idea of flavour over form, and where you can get a taste of Lucchi's cooking at a fraction of the price at Buona Terra. The three-course lunch menu starts at $58 per person, but those after a fuller experience can opt for The Signature Journey or The Pasta Journey ($88 per person), both options served with a selection of welcome snacks and house-made bread. Assaggi's butter is a showstopper: a mountain of whipped Beppino Occelli butter to pair with honey-glazed brioche with balsamic reduction and duck fat – absolutely sinful. The cocktails are worth ordering too, curated by Japanese speakeasy Bar Kakure, with creations like the Assaggi Negroni, Paloma, Sicilian Spritz and more, priced competitively at $18 per drink.

It seems like a new omakase counter in Singapore opens every month, and here's another one to pay attention to. Sushi Ryujiro marks the Singapore debut of Michelin-starred chef Ryujiro Nakamura, whose Tokyo restaurant earned its first star in 2021. Located within The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore, this snug 10-seater spot flies in seasonal seafood from Japan four times a week, which is about standard for any sushiya of this standing. The real difference lies in Chef Nakamura's personal connections with independent suppliers, which allow the joint to source its produce directly from these fishermen instead of wholesale markets like Toyosu. Choose from three omakase menus – the Nigiri Lunch ($228), lunch omakase ($298) and dinner omakase ($428) – where standout courses include chawanmushi with rare konoko (sea cucumber) and a trio of tuna, featuring chutoro, akami and ootoro.

Housed in a restored barrack in Dempsey, this new spot feels like a sun-dappled courtyard somewhere in Spain, with high ceilings, terracotta hues and earthy tones. Casa Mori brings together two familiar names. Chef Willin Low of the former Wild Rocket, who pioneered 'Mod-Sin' cuisine, teams up with Kulto's José Alonso for a menu blending Singaporean and Asian flavours with Spanish influences. And the best example of the collaboration is the kalipoquetas ($16). Part curry puff (also colloquially referred to as 'kalipok') and part Spanish croqueta, this playful mash-up is filled with chicken and potato curry, with a dab of curry aioli sauce beneath. There's also the garlic huajiao prawns ($32), which feels like a very natural Chinese-Spanish crossover with the addition of huajiao wine and Sichuan pepper to an oily confit garlic base. The restaurant also offers a decently priced $35 weekday lunch set.
