Sydney Opera House – the architectural gem in the heart of Sydney Harbour – is a pretty good stage. Inside and outside of its beautifully brutalist walls, it’s played host to everything from ecstatic pop shows to next-level cabaret. And this August, it’s entering the sporting arena. For two days only, the Sydney Opera House's Northern Boardwalk will be transformed into a custom-built padel court, welcoming world-class players, celebrity guests and keen first-timers for the inaugural ‘Padel Invitational’.
Popping up on August 15 and 16, the event will be a very Sydney celebration of the trending new racquet sport. Across the weekend, we can expect professional showcase matches featuring some of the world's best players, the finals of Australia's leading club competition, community court sessions, live entertainment, food and drinks, plus a celebrity edition of the 1 Point Padel format inspired by the Australian Open's 1 Point Slam (with Aussie tennis legend Pat Rafter expected to lead the charge).
Never heard of padel? Think of it as a fast-paced tennis-squash hybrid. Played in doubles on an enclosed glass court, the walls stay in play, creating long rallies, sharp angles and a speedy game that is – according to players – easy to pick up but difficult to master. According to the team behind Padel Invitational, the sport has already hooked more than 38 million players across 170 countries, with participation expected to reach beyond 105 million players globally by 2030.
"We're bringing the world's fastest-growing racquet sport to one of the world's most recognisable stages," said Padel Australia chair Tom Larner. "Whether you're a tennis player, a sports fan or someone who has never picked up a racquet, padel is easy to learn, incredibly social and a lot of fun."
Tickets start from $30 and are on sale now via the Sydney Opera House website. Keen players can also enter for the chance to hit the court alongside Pat Rafter, Casey Dellacqua and some of the world's top padel stars on the harbourfront court.
