If you’ve never visited Lennox Hastie’s fire-powered Surry Hills restaurant, now’s the chance

Firedoor has brought back its à la carte menu for the first time since 2020, giving you the chance to try Lennox Hastie’s acclaimed fire-powered Surry Hills restaurant without committing to the full set menu. If you’ve never visited the pioneering diner, one of Sydney’s best, which catapulted to international fame after featuring on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, now’s the time.
Available for Friday and Saturday lunch from 12-4pm, the approachable new menu includes plump, ocean-sweet Yamba pipis bolstered with an umami-rich XO and karkalla (you have to order them); charred radicchio with pancetta and roasted hazelnuts; roasted bone marrow with mustard, parsley and horseradish; and wood-fired Driftwood cheese with fruit bread and spiced fig jam.
There’s full-flavoured, perfectly seasoned steak, of course, including a 250g Westholme Purebred Wagyu 9+ sirloin and a 600g, 150-day-aged David Blackmore heritage Wagyu.
On the Friday I visit, Lennox tells me how he treats wood not as a tool but as an essential ingredient. He’s worked with the same wood supplier from Blackheath for 14 years.
Dining at Firedoor is a pretty extraordinary experience. If you can, sit at the chef’s counter, where you can watch the chefs, including Lennox, work in harmony with the roaring flames.
And the food? It’s even more delicious than it looks.
