When it comes to aspirational postcodes in New South Wales, Wategos – the magical coastal idyll in the southern corner of Byron Bay – is up there. For decades, it’s been Raes on Wategos that’s been setting the gold standard for accommodation in the area, and while Rae’s will always be the original Wategos escape, an architecturally stunning new stay could be coming for its crown as the area’s most sparkly stay. Enter, Este Wategos: two brand-new apartments complete with breezy rooftop terraces, designer bedrooms and glass-bottom pools.

Perched between the palms under the shadow of the famous Cape Byron Lighthouse, with views across Wategos Beach, Este is the kind of place that looks like it’s been plucked straight from an Amex ad. Conceived by Shaun Lockyer Architects and co-founders Dr George Bilios and entrepreneur Chris Bissiotis, it’s a striking union of rainforest calm and ocean energy – equal parts tranquil retreat and architectural masterpiece.
The property comprises two three-storey residences, each with its own private rooftop terrace, glass-bottom pool and curated concierge service. Book both villas together and you’ve got space for up to 12 guests – perfect for family getaways, milestone celebrations or just a particularly decadent week away with friends.

More than just a beautiful stay, Este Wategos is built around the philosophy of “prescribing nature”. Drawing on blue-green space theory – the idea that proximity to both water and greenery promotes optimal health – every design choice is intended to restore and recharge. “The proximity to both the ocean and rainforest isn’t just about aesthetics,” says co-founder Dr George Bilios. “It’s about creating a space where guests can disconnect, recharge, and experience the wellbeing benefits of being immersed in nature.”
Crafted by DB Build, the property showcases hand-laid stonework, bespoke spotted gum finishes and Italian travertine paving that flows from the entry courtyard through to the living spaces. A striking three-storey light well connects the villas, flooding interiors with golden Byron light. Inside, interiors by Fiona Dunin of FMD Architects are elevated with custom pieces from Mark Tuckey and Jardan, and art by Sydney-based artist Martine Emdur.

Up on the roof, lush terraces invite long lunches and sunset swims, with glass-bottom pools offering a front-row seat to one of the country’s most beautiful beaches.
“Both George and I have travelled extensively and through our travels we became inspired to create a tranquil yet luxurious getaway in one of our favourite locations,” says co-owner Chris Bissiotis. “With Este Wategos, we’re excited to share a unique sanctuary unlike anything seen before in Byron Bay.”
