The century-old dim sum restaurant is just a short walk from its former location

Hong Kong’s iconic dim sum tea house Lin Heung Lau has left its Wellington Street location and reopened at a new venue in Sheung Wan. Since opening in 1927, this restaurant has prided itself on keeping the dim sum culinary tradition of ‘one teapot two dishes’ alive and continues to share the timeless practice with Hong Kong diners.
While Lin Heung Lau has been around for over 100 years, the restaurant has gone through its fair share of financing and closure scares. From briefly shuttering in the summer of 2022 to reopening in the spring of 2024, this institution shook the city when it announced earlier this year that it would be closing its Central location for good.
The second iteration of Lin Heung Lau can now be found at Tung Ning Building at the intersection of Connaught Road Central and Hillier Road, conveniently right next to Exit B of Sheung Wan MTR station. Aside from displaying its recognisable neon light signs, the restaurant has also added a giant golden dragon and phoenix on its facade, making it instantly stand out from its surroundings.
Unlike its Central location, the new venue is spread over two storeys and offers ample space for diners to enjoy their meal comfortably. Traces of the old Lin Heung Lau can be found on the first floor, such as the restaurant’s original tables and chairs, dim sum trolleys, large kettles, and traditional gaiwan tea cups. On the other hand, the restaurant’s second floor has a brand-spanking-new look with a traditional dragon-and-phoenix grand hall, typically found in old-school Cantonese restaurants.
Most importantly, the restaurant’s menu remains unchanged. Customers can pick out their favourite dim sum items and order pan-fried bites from the kitchen, or flag down the staff who’ll periodically pass by with trolleys full of goodies.
