If you thought men getting emotional at sports and yelling at players kicking a ball around onscreen is peak masculine competitiveness, you might want to think again. A new sport is making its way to Hong Kong, and it pits men’s virility against each other – by literally racing their sperm.

Yes, sperm cells are collected from six competitors, put onto a microscopic track, and sent off to race towards an artificial egg. The world’s smallest sport might also just be the world’s most niche and hilarious. Launched in Los Angeles last year, the new Sperm Race Asia Division is hosted by president Dick Gay who will hype things up WWE-style, just like if racing swimmers is a high-octane combat sport.

Aside from being testosterone-fuelled chaos, the Sperm Race is actually on a mission to raise awareness for the declining state of sperm health all over the world. According to their official website, global sperm counts have fallen by over 50 per cent since the 1970s, and are decreasing by about two per cent each year. Men are becoming less fertile, which means declining birth rates due to lower fertilisation successes and less healthy children, Gay says.

By creating party-like events that inject a good dose of fun and competitiveness into the proceedings, the issue of sperm health is broached to men without embarrassment or shame. If you’d like to see some random men’s swimmers racing against each other, head over to AOAO on Wednesday, August 5. Tickets are $150, including a free drink.
